Blackburn wins Nobel Prize
(Tuesday 6 October 2009)
Australian scientist Elizabeth Blackburn was overnight awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine, becoming the first Australian woman to win the honour.
Professor Blackburn, along with two American colleagues, was rewarded for her groundbreaking work on cells and chromosomes, and the discovery of an enzyme which was named Telomerase.
"I have to say it feels wonderful thank you. It is exciting and I'm just really excited that I'm sharing it with Jack and with Carol," she said.
"I don't think anybody does their science to begin with thinking about a Nobel Prize, we were really just driven by the science and the questions that were so fascinating."
