Garrett: no croc safari
(Friday 2 October 2009)
Federal environment minister Peter Garrett has shot down a plan to introduce crocodile safaris in the Northern Territory.
Part of the Northern Territory government’s draft saltwater crocodile management plan, it would see up to 25 crocodiles hunted by cashed-up tourists over five years.
“I have weighed carefully the evidence presented in the proposal, as well as the views expressed during the public comment period, including those conveyed to me by people directly affected by crocodiles," he said.
"Consistent with decision of previous environment ministers on this issue, I am of the view that safari hunting is not a suitable approach for the responsible management of crocodiles. Importantly, my decision not to approve safari hunting does not prevent the controlled removal of problem crocodiles to protect the public and livestock.”
