Nelson retires

Former Leader of the Opposition, Dr Brendan Nelson, thanked his family and supporters in his valedictory speech to the federal parliament today.

Dr Nelson spoke of his position as defence minister as the highlight of his career.

"Defence remains the most demanding yet personally satisfying role that I have had in my public life," he said.

"It was far more demanding than being opposition leader."
