Flannery: larger carbon offsets needed
(Friday 3 July 2009)
Former Australian of the Year, Tim Flannery, has said that the government’s planned carbon legislation needs to allow more offsets or there will be no benefit for agriculture.
Professor Flannery said that Australia’s scheme only allows for tree-planting offsets, rather than exploring other options.
He says biochar, a form of carbon capture and storage, has successfully increased crop yields in Western Australia by as much as 20 per cent and could help reduce the global impact of farming.
“You get better soil moisture retention, you get less nitrous oxide emissions, and better plant growth," he said.
