Middelberg: swine flu vaccine breakthrough

The University of Queensland’s Anton Middelberg is leading the Australian charge to create a swine flu vaccine, with the team making a major breakthrough this week.

Professor Middelberg says that the university signed a research collaboration agreement a US based company just weeks after the first case, and two weeks ago received the genetic construct of the disease. They have now created enough vaccine for 1000 doses.

“The world first here is that we're engaging very early with a breakthrough technology, to try and I guess speed and facilitate its transfer to Australia," he said.

"We were very amazed that we were able to take this only two weeks ago and within a week of recreating the components, create a batch of vaccine. So we're stunned at how easy it is to transfer this to different sites."
