Bell new High Court judge

Justice Virginia Bell has been appointed as the new High Court judge, replacing Justice Michael Kirby.

Justice Bell will be the 48th person appointed to the court, and only the fourth woman.

"She would be someone you'd anticipate would be in a similar mould to Michael Kirby with some of those interests, but the High Court is full of people who've confounded those expectations,” said Professor George Williams, from the University of NSW.

"She's also someone who's got a bit of reputation for having an interest in social justice and a strong criminal law background and she's someone who'll bring a different perspective to the High Court."
