Albanese votes to keep Qantas (Monday 8 December 2008) Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development, Anthony Norman Albanese has explained that Qantas ought to remain an Australian owned airline for security purposes. His comments come after a survey reveal that 63 per cent of Australian believe the safety standards of Qantas has dropped in recent years. "There are national security issues, particularly for an island continent located on the globe where Australia is, for having a national airline," Albanese said. "When Australians were having difficulty departing from Thailand, I was able to pick up the phone to the chief executive of Qantas, Alan Joyce, and make the request that extra flights be put on."
