Rintoul: Scientists use elephant seals to help monitor climate change
(Wednesday 13 August 2008)
CSIRO scientists including Oceanographer Dr Stephen Rintoul are harnessing the use of elephant seals to gain detailed data about the ocean underneath the sea ice.
The new found data will help scientists understand and monitor climate change.
"So far, the ocean underneath the sea ice is really the big blind spot in our observing system that we use to observe the global ocean," Dr Rintoul said.
"If we want to understand what's going to happen to [the] climate in the future we need to know what the sea ice is going to do. Will there be more or less and will it form more or less rapidly?"
