Bert turns 70

Australian television legend Bert Newton turns 70 today, and yesterday celebrated a day early with a party at the Nine Network’s Melbourne studio.

The bash was attended by members of the Newton family including Bert’s wife Patti and daughter Lauren, plus a host of Channel Nine stars including Eddie McGuire, Peter Hitchener and Sam Newman.

“I feel terrific and it’s great to see so many old faces and new faces together,” Newton said. “I’ve had a lot of celebrations on television – my 21st birthday, my 30th birthday – and it’s really nice to be here for the big 7-0.”

With filming duties for 20-1 set to fill most of his birthday today, Newton said the occasion would be marked with a quiet family dinner this evening.
