Fischer ambassador to the Vatican (Tuesday 22 July 2008) Former politician the Hon. Tim Fischer will become Australia's first resident ambassador to the Vatican. Prime Minister Kevin Rudd announced Mr Fischer's appointment to the post when farewelling the pontiff yesterday. Mr Fischer describes himself as a "less than perfect practising Catholic,” saying he was familiar with the Islamic, Buddhist and Jewish faiths and was committed to promoting inter-faith dialogue.
