Norman third in British Open

Veteran Australian golfer Greg Norman shot a final round 77 overnight to relinquish his chance for what would have been an incredible British Open victory.

Playing his first tournament since May and his first major in three years, Norman entered the last round with a two stroke lead, but in difficult conditions could not hold off reigning champion Padraig Harrington, who finished with a 69 to defend his title.

Fifty-three year-old Norman, the 1986 and 1993 British Open winner, said he was happy with his tournament.

“It was a good week,” he said. “I’m disappointed for sure but at the end of the day, Padraig did a tremendous job and he is a deserving champion.”
