Pell denies sex abuse cover up

(Wednesday 9 July 2008)

The Catholic Archbishop of Sydney, Cardinal George Pell, has denied he covered up sexual abuse by a Sydney priest.

Cardinal Pell’s denial was made after new claims arose concerning Pell’s supposed rejection of the sexual assault of Lismore man Anthony Jones in 2003 by Father Terence Goodall.

Despite advice from a church investigator that the claims should be substantiated, Cardinal Pell neglected to inform Mr Jones of a church report stating Father Goodall was guilty of other sexual and indecent assaults, had "no boundaries" and "no sympathy for victims" and was "likely to reoffend."

Cardinal Pell yesterday said both statements were untrue and that "there was no cover-up."
