Wensley predicts Australia will be a republic

The next governor of Queensland, Diplomat Penelope Wensley, predicts Australia will eventually become a republic.

Ms Wensley will be sworn in at the end of the month to replace Quentin Bryce, who will become governor-general in September.

"I believe that in due course the Australian people will decide they wish to become a republic, but they haven't made that decision yet," she said.

"Until such time as they do so, we have institutions and systems that need to be upheld and respected."
