Anglican leaders must come together: Aspinall

Australia’s Anglican Primate Phillip Aspinall says conservative Anglicans determined to boycott the decennial conference of national church leaders – Lambeth – would better serve their interests by attending the conference and seeking reform from within.

In response to increasingly liberal views on issues such as homosexual clergy and same-sex blessings becoming prevalent within the global church, a group of Anglicans, including the Sydney Archbishop Peter Jensen, have threatened to break away and form a separate conservative faction. But Dr Aspinall believes this would not serve a purpose.

“It is not enough to dismiss the existing structures of the Communion,” he said.

“If they are not working effectively, the challenge is to renew them rather than to improvise solutions that may seem to be effective for some in the short term but will continue to create more problems than they solve.”
